Why use an SRS?

THINK What are the advantages of maintaining an SRS document? Pause and write down your responses before reading further.
Advantages of an SRS
| Advantage | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Forms an agreement between customers and developers | The SRS is given to customers, who read it, and after several iterations it is accepted; customers know what to expect and developers know what customers expect. |
| Reduces future reworks | Forces stakeholders to rigorously think about all requirements before design and development, reducing changes later. |
| Provides a basis for estimating costs and schedules | The size of the software is a function of all requirements; effort and cost are estimated from size, and the project manager creates a schedule from these estimates. |
| Facilitates future extensions | A basis for planning future enhancements. |
Drawback: A lot of documentation is required. This is fine if the requirements are fixed.
