REVISION AND PRACTICE
Week 9 — Quick Revision
On this page 7 headings
Start here Cultivating a growth mindset, all on one page.
Fixed vs growth (Carol Dweck)
| Fixed | Growth |
|---|---|
| Avoids challenges | Embraces challenges |
| Gives up early | Persists through setbacks |
| Effort is useless | Effort is the path to mastery |
| Ignores criticism | Learns from criticism |
| Threatened by others’ success | Inspired by others’ success |
- Power words: group (not divide), offering (not load), appreciate (not envy).
- Kartic: criticism is about the task, not the person. Prasanna: from “brain freeze” to the power of choice.
Zones and rejection
- Four zones: comfort (safe, in control) → fear (no confidence, excuses) → learning (face challenges, new skills) → growth (purpose, new goals).
- Juggling pencils: miss one, focus on the next. Don’t do everything at once.
- Rejection: external (“no”) and internal (limiting beliefs, fear, self-talk). Turn resistance into persistence.
- Ask why the answer was no (solar vehicle). Become part of an ecosystem (simulation-game partners). “The answer is yes” (army logistics).
End negative self-talk
- Upside-down drawing (Betty Edwards): no judgment means less stress and more detail.
- ABRA: Acknowledge (don’t fight; what you resist persists) → Breathe in what you want → Release what you don’t want → Align with who you want to be.
- Process over result (Dhoni). Write the list (the 2005 conference opened by Kalam).
Failure and the Mouse Merchant
- Failure = a stepping stone and a source of questions (research scholars, Edison).
- Knowing what can go wrong = exception handling. Cake → pudding. Grade down from 100.
- J. K. Rowling’s Harvard speech: failure strips away the inessential; imagination builds the future and empathy.
- Mouse Merchant (Jataka tale): dead mouse → coin → jaggery and water → flowers → wood from a storm-hit garden → fortune. Make the most of what you have; spot hidden opportunities.
- COVID: online work saved travel and reached the world.
Abundance mindset
- Half full? With air and space, the glass is infinitely full.
- Five habits: be open and curious; use words of power; gratitude journal (the opposite is entitlement); be resourceful (internal and external); give back / pay it forward.
- Card game (UNO-style): reframe “I always lose”, “I’ll never have friends” (the word never), “I’m terrible at organising” (add yet).
The 4R framework
- Recharge mind and body (meditation, sleep, nature…).
- Resource your potential (personal capital).
- Review and Reframe your strategy (mindset, words, habits, resources).
- Refocus to take inspired action (tiny steps, tiny gains).
