Week 1 at a glance

Outbound training (OBT)

  • Learning teamwork by doing outdoor group tasks.
  • Group effect / synergy: Paes and Bhupathi, ordinary in singles, No. 1 as a doubles pair.
  • Buddy carry: strangers bonded after carrying each other.
  • Watch for: planning, using every person as a resource, the time limit, mid-course correction, helping the weakest link.
  • Three rules: wear a smile; balance head and heart; safety first (physical and mental).

The activities

  • A-frame march: one rider on the frame, four rope-holders; both legs must cross the line.
  • Caterpillar walk: everyone on two planks; move in step or not at all.
  • Faculty lessons: clear goal (Arjuna and the bird’s eye); know and allocate resources; share the vision; review and correct; planning time is never wasted; back the final plan as if it were your own.

What is teamwork?

  • TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More.
  • Small creatures together beat big ones. Don’t panic.
  • Unions and diversity and inclusion: change through togetherness.
  • Geese: uplift, rotating leader, honking encouragement, care.
  • “Walk fast alone; walk far together.”
  • Match roles to strengths.
