Week 2 at a glance

Big ideas

  • First write a functional specification (what output for each input) and a timing specification (how fast).
  • Combinational logic has no memory; sequential logic remembers (from Week 7).
  • A truth table has 2ⁿ rows. It gets huge fast, so we use Boolean algebra.
  • Gates: NOT (flip), AND (all 1), OR (any 1), NAND, NOR, XOR (different / odd number of 1s), XNOR (same).
  • Precedence: NOT → AND → OR.
  • Laws come in dual pairs (swap + ↔︎ ·, 0 ↔︎ 1). Shortcuts: XY+XY‾=XX Y + X \overline{Y} = X, X+XY=XX + X Y = X, X+YZ=(X+Y)(X+Z)X + Y Z = \left(X + Y\right) \left(X + Z\right).
  • De Morgan: (A+B)‾=A‾B‾\overline{\left(A + B\right)} = \overline{A} \overline{B} and (AB)‾=A‾+B‾\overline{\left(A B\right)} = \overline{A} + \overline{B}. NOR⁡=AND⁡\operatorname{NOR} = \operatorname{AND} with flipped inputs; NAND⁡=OR⁡\operatorname{NAND} = \operatorname{OR} with flipped inputs.
  • SOP: for each row with F=1F = 1, write a minterm (1 → letter, 0 → barred letter) and OR them. Short form Σm(…)\Sigma m \left(\ldots \right).

Exam recipes

Question Method
Probability F=1F = 1 (rows with F=1F = 1) ÷ 2ⁿ
When is f always 1? list the minterms in binary, find the pattern, test every option
How many minterms for “exactly k of n”? C(n, k)
Fill in the missing gates write Y with GT1 and GT2, test options with a truth table
Trace a circuit write every gate’s output in order

Practice questions

  1. How many rows in a truth table with 6 inputs?
2⁶ = 64.
  1. A=1,B=0A = 1 , B = 0. Find AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR.
0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 0.
  1. Simplify X+X‾⋅YX + \overline{X} \cdot Y.
(X+X‾)(X+Y)=X+Y\left(X + \overline{X}\right) \left(X + Y\right) = X + Y.
  1. Apply De Morgan to (A+B‾+C)‾\overline{\left(A + \overline{B} + C\right)}.
A‾⋅B⋅C‾\overline{A} \cdot B \cdot \overline{C}.
  1. Write F(A,B,C)=Σm(1,6)F \left(A , B , C\right) = \Sigma m \left(1 , 6\right) as SOP.
A‾B‾C+ABC‾\overline{A} \overline{B} C + A B \overline{C}.
  1. P(output = 1) for F=A+B+CF = A + B + C with random inputs?
7/8 = 0.875 (only 000 gives 0).
  1. F=1F = 1 when exactly one of four inputs is 1. Minterms?
C(4,1)=4C \left(4 , 1\right) = 4.
  1. True or false: a decoder or a multiplexer is a sequential circuit.
False. Both are combinational (no memory). You’ll meet them in Week 4.
