A record’s category may repeat much later in a shuffled pile. Keep one persistent count for each category, rather than resetting whenever the next card has a different label.
All 30 score cards, grouped by city. Each card increases exactly one city counter.

Each store keeps its own count; MaxCount is compared only with the count just increased.
If you have not seen the category, create its counter at zero. Then add 1 for the current record. The creation and increment are separate ideas: the first record of a category must not be missed.
Counts = empty table
MaxCount = 0
For each record X {
key = X.category
If key has no counter: Counts[key] = 0
Counts[key] = Counts[key] + 1
if (Counts[key] > MaxCount) {
MaxCount = Counts[key]
}
}
Counts[key] means “the counter belonging to this category” in a small labeled table. It is teaching notation for the lecture’s one-variable-per-category idea; you do not need to know a specific programming-language dictionary yet.
Every other counter is unchanged. If MaxCount was correct before this visit, only the changed counter can beat it. Counts grow by one, so the previous best value never becomes invalid by decreasing. This avoids a separate scan of all category counters after each record.
Chennai 8; Madurai 5; Bengaluru 5; Vellore 3; Trichy 3; Erode 2; four other cities 1 each.
Maximum city frequency
8, for Chennai.
A bill count measures purchases represented by bills, not all visitors to a store and not necessarily distinct customers. A person can generate several bills. Also, keeping only MaxCount gives the winning number, not automatically the winning category; store its label if the question asks for it.
Try it yourself
For A,B,A,C,B,A, give final category counts and maximum frequency.
Show explained answer
A=3, B=2, C=1; maximum frequency=3.
Try it yourself
Why not reset A’s counter when B appears?
Show explained answer
A may occur again later. The counter represents all A records seen so far, not just one contiguous run.
Try it yourself
If there are 30 bills, what should the complete store counts add to?
Show explained answer
30, assuming every bill has exactly one valid store category and is counted once.
Try it yourself
Does maximum bill frequency 15 prove a shop had 15 distinct customers?
Show explained answer
No. One customer may have several bills, and visitors who bought nothing are not in the bill data.
